CBI to probe Imphal “fake encounter”

Following the Gauhati High Court’s order for a probe by an “independent agency,” the Central Bureau of Investigation will go into the alleged fake encounter killing of a Manipuri boy by the State police last year.

A Special Investigation Team, headed by a Joint Director, will conduct the probe.

An umbrella body of social organisations in the State, the Apunba Lup, alleged that the July 23 Imphal encounter, in which Chungkham Sanjit Singh, was killed was “fake.” The incident led to wide protests across Manipur.

“The case was registered under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC and other sections of the Arms Act on January 16 in Imphal against unknown persons of the Manipur police,” a CBI spokesperson said.

The CBI would also investigate the death of an “unknown woman” in the same incident.

The SIT would include two Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, two Superintendents of Police, a team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, and medical experts from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, a CBI spokesperson said.
