CBI taking U-turn on Shah: AAP

December 26, 2014 11:52 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 04:49 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Accusing the CBI of taking a U-turn in the Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram Prajapati murder case, the Aam Aadmi Party alleged that the agency was preparing an escape route for BJP president Amit Shah.

Mr. Shah is named as an accused in the case probed by the CBI. Referring to the “changed stand” adopted vis-à-vis Mr. Shah’s alleged role in the two murders in a special CBI court, party leader Ashish Khetan said the agency which has so far named him as the prime accused was now planning to try him as just another accused in the case.

The basis of these allegations, he said, was the CBI’s recent submission before the court in Mumbai where Mr. Shah has filed a discharge application.

“Mr. Shah’s lawyers submitted that the charges against him be dismissed. We expected the CBI to stick to its earlier stand of naming Amit Shah as the kingpin of the conspiracy and lynchpin of an extortion racket he was running with senior officers of the Gujarat Police and gangsters like Sohrabuddin,” he said.

Mr. Khetan said the CBI, instead of arguing the case strongly, only presented a few brief facts and urged that the case should continue.

He also said that while Mr. Shah’s lawyers argued over three days, the CBI lawyer wrapped things up within 15 minutes thus making the prosecution’s case a “weak and wishy-washy one.”

“The shift in the position is clearly the outcome of the BJP assuming power at the Centre which effectively brought the CBI under its control.,” he said.
