Mehdi Masroor Biswas, suspected handler of the pro-Islamic State twitter account @ShamiWitness, is employed with the Kolkata-based ITC.

ITC Ltd., where Mehdi Masroor Biswas is employed, is engaged with the police for investigating the matter and has said that this is now a top priority area for the company.

Mehdi the suspected handler of the pro-Islamic State twitter account @ShamiWitness, was apprehended from his one-room rented apartment in Jalahalli, Bengaluru on Saturday morning. The 24 year old hails from the city and is an employee of ITC which is headquartered here.

When contacted, ITC said that Mr Biswas was employed with its Foods Division and the company has extended every co operation with the investigation process. “ We are engaged with the police for the investigation. That is the top-most priority.”

“ An employee has been arrested by Bengaluru Police in connection with an allegedly objectionable social media activity carried out under a pseudonym. We informed Bengaluru Policye about his employment status as soon as we found media reports on this issue, and have extended every co operation with the investigation process”, ITC said.

ITC, whose business verticals extend from cigarettes to hotels, foods and the retail sector said that Mr Biswas was selected from campus recruitment and has worked in a junior trainee capacity for about two years. The company visits several technical and management institutes as part of its routine recruitment requirements, ITC said.

The company declined to disclose whether any odd behaviour was noticed in Biswas by his colleagues or his superiors or about the company’s plans on Mr Biswas. “ We will not comment anything further at this moment” ITC’s official spokesman said. EOM
