Bhanot, Verma's judicial custody extended

March 16, 2011 12:15 am | Updated November 17, 2021 03:40 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The former Secretary-General and the former Director-General of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Lalit Bhanot and V.K. Verma respectively were sent to the Tihar Jail by a court here on Tuesday for 14 more days in judicial custody.

The CBI told the court that the investigation was still on. It has added forgery charges (IPC Sections 467, 468 and 471) against the two, but the remand application did not state the reasons for this.

Senior advocate Ramesh Gupta, appearing for Dr. Bhanot, argued that the decision on the Timing, Scoring and Results (TSR) system contract was taken by a number of committees and even involving the Ministry of Sports and that Dr. Bhanot did not take the decision in an individual capacity.

The bail applications submitted to the court and the copy given to the CBI, which ran into several hundred pages, had some pages missing, forcing the court to adjourn the arguments for the day.

While the hearing on Dr. Bhanot's bail application will resume on March 23, Mr. Verma's will be heard on March 24.

The CBI has been asked to file a reply to the bail applications by March 22.
