BJP to gherao Parliament to protest price rise

March 14, 2010 07:06 pm | Updated 07:06 pm IST - Haldwani (Uttarakhand)

BJP said it would gherao the Parliament on April 21 to protest against the alleged failure of the UPA government in curbing the prices of essential commodities across the country.

“We will mount our offensive against the government on price rise. For this purpose, the BJP will gherao Parliament on April 21,” said senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar addressing a rally against the Centre’s economic policies.

Kumar also supported the demand of the extension of concessional industrial package (CIP), which expires on March 31, by another period of 10 years.

BJP will take up the issue of extension of tax exemptions to Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh with the Centre. For this purpose, a separate strategy would be chalked out, he said.

Chief Minister R.P. Nishank said the people were facing a lot of pressure due to shooting inflation especially after the prices of food items registered a sharp increase.

Nishank also said the investment scenario in Uttarakhand would take a beating as the tax sops were not extended. The CIP was given by former Prime Miniser Atal Behari Vajpayee for a period of 10 years which was curtailed by the Congress government to 7 years.

“This is unjustified. The tax sops must be extended till 2020,” Nishank said.

Former chief minister B.C. Khanduri and Bhagat Singh Koshiyari also addressed the gathering.
