The assets of 28 MLAs seeking re-election in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly election have grown by 120 per cent since the 2006 elections, according to the West Bengal Election Watch.
While candidates of almost all major political parties have contributed towards the giant leap in growth of asset percentage, MLAs of the All-India Forward Bloc have ranked first with an asset increase by 330 per cent followed by the Congress at 236 per cent. Analysed on the basis of the affidavits submitted by individual candidates to the Election Commission at the time of their filing nomination, the Congress candidate from Kandi, Apurba Sarkar, has topped the list, whose assets grew from Rs. 7 lakh in 2006 to Rs. 1.32 crore in 2011.
In terms of percentage, however, the AIFB's sitting MLA and candidate from Murshidabad, Bivas Chakraborty, has shown a maximum growth of assets by 86130 per cent (from Rs. 1475 in 2006 to Rs. 12,70,418 in 2011) and is followed by the Trinamool Congress candidate from Nakashipara, Kallol Khan, who registered an asset growth of 6548 6448 per cent (from Rs. 6121 in 2006 to Rs. 4,00,800 in 2011).
