967 personnel selected for police medals

Honour for members of police, paramilitary and disaster management forces

A total of 967 personnel from the police, paramilitary and disaster management forces have been awarded police medals on Republic Day this year.

The President’s Police Medal for Gallantry has been awarded to 25 personnel, the Police Medal for Gallantry to 132, the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service to 98 and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service to 712.

Six Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, four posthumously, have been honoured with the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry for exemplary courage in combat operations against Naxals and militants.

Commandant Jeewan Ram Khaswan, Second-in-Command Rajesh Sharan, Inspector Ashok Kumar Yadav and ASI Jitender Kumar were killed in a Naxal ambush near Janiguda in Odisha in February 2012.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Azam and constable Jitendra Kumar Gupta of the force’s 128th Battalion have been awarded the gallantry medal for exceptional display of courage in a June 2013 operation, in which two terrorists were killed.

Among those awarded gallantry medals posthumously are Company Commander Lav Kumar Bhagat and constable Celestine Kujur from Andhra Pradesh; head constable Ganpat Nevru Madavi; constable Sunil Tukadu Madavi and Police Naik Giridhar Nago Atram from Maharashtra; and Central Reserve Police Force Assistant Sub-Inspector Avadh Bihari, head constable Yogendra Singh and constable Bijender from Chhattisgarh.

CRPF Deputy Commandant Binod Kumar; Sub-Inspector Ramjee Ram; head constables Lal Babu Sah, V. Climond Joseph and Ray Singh; and constables Ashok Nirala and Bikaramaditya Yadav; besides Indo-Tibetan Border Police Sub-Inspector Jayendra Prasad and constables Nand Ram, Bibhuti Roy, Sarvesh Kumar, Jomon P.G. and Ajay Lal; have been awarded gallantry medals posthumously.

Gallantry medals have also been conferred posthumously on National Disaster Response Force Second-in-Command Nitya Nand Gupta; Inspector Bhim Singh; Sub-Inspector Satish Kumar; and constables K. Vinaygan, Bassvaraj Yaragatti, Santosh Kumar Paswan, Sanjiva Kumar, Pawar Shashi Kant Ramesh and Ahir Rao Ganesh.

28 for CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation has bagged 28 President’s Police Medals for distinguished service and Police Medal for meritorious service on Republic Day this year.

The Police Medal for distinguished service has been conferred on five officers, while 23 have been awarded the one for meritorious service. Among those recognised for their distinguished service are Joint Director Amrendra Singh, Superintendent of Police Sivagnanam, Additional Superintendents of Police N. Krishnamurthy and Rajiv Dwivedi and Deputy Superintendent Suman Kumar.

Deputy Inspectors-General Rajkumar Maruti Vhatkar and Ghanshyam Upadhyay; Deputy Director Deepika Suri; Deputy Superintendents of Police Ayyadurai Lazaras, Ram Avtar Yadav, Satish Rathi, Anil Yadav, Sanjay Sinha and Rajiv Kumar; and Inspector Ruthirapathy Valavan are among the recipients of the Police Medal for meritorious service.

36 for CISF

The Central Industrial Security Force has bagged 36 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and Fire Service Medal on this Republic Day.

The President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service has been conferred on Inspector-General K. Jayanth Murali, Deputy Commandant Hemendra Singh and Assistant Commandant G.R. Nair. Among the Meritorious Service award winners are Deputy Inspector-General Jyoti Sinha, Senior Commandant Sanjay Kumar and Assistant Inspector-General Prabodh Chandra.

Fire Service Medal

While the President’s Fire Service Medal for Distinguished Service has been bagged by Deputy Commandant Siddharth Raha, the Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service has been conferred on Inspector Praveen Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector P. Kuppu Samy and head constables Pratap Singh Rawat and Suresh Kumar.

For NSG officer

National Security Guard Group Commander Lehna Singh Dahiya has been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, whereas the Police Medal for Meritorious Service has been conferred on Group Commanders Vikash Mohan Singh and Dharmendra Narain Lal, Team Commander Shalendra Prasad Baluni, Assistant Commanders-I Bhopal Singh Mehta and Tarsem Lal Dadwal and Assistant Commander-II Narender Singh Pathania.
