821 policemen died on duty in 2012

Among the police personnel who committed suicide in 2012, Tamil Nadu topped the list — 58. Maharashtra accounted for 28, Karnataka 17, Madhya Pradesh 12 and 10 each in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.

In all, 821 police personnel were killed across the country in 2012 when they were on duty, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

The 28 States together accounted for 795 deaths and the seven Union Territories 26. Of these, accidents claimed 657 lives.

Uttar Pradesh stood on top with 110 such deaths and 99 of them were caused by accidents. Maharashtra comes second with 83 deaths. Out of the 72 killed in Gujarat, 71 were victims of accidents. Punjab shares the same figure.

In operations against terrorists and extremists, 83 policemen were killed and the highest was in Chhattisgarh —37, followed by Maharashtra (14) and Odisha (13).

In 2011 too, Chhattisgarh accounted for the highest number of police personnel killed in action against terrorists and extremists — 52. No policeman from the Union Territories was killed in operations against extremists last year.

Last year, sixty out of 63 deaths in Tamil Nadu were caused by accidents.

Criminals killed 61 police personnel last year, with Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh on top with 12 each. Four policemen faced such deaths in Delhi.
