3 bookies held in Thane district

Three bookies were arrested on Wednesday night from Kalyan in Thane district.

Chetan Bhanushali, Keval Bhanushali and Sachin Teli were arrested from a place near Annapurna Hotel. The police have seized mobile phones, a laptop and Rs.36,000 in cash.

“We arrested them while accepting bets on the ongoing IPL cricket match. They have been sent to police custody and we will be interrogating them to find out the larger network of bookies,” said R.R. Patil, Senior Inspector of the Bazarpeth station.

The Nashik police have also arrested five persons for allegedly placing bets, Assistant Commissioner Pankaj Rahane said on Thursday. The police acted on a tip-off and raided a bungalow in Nashik on Wednesday night. Ten mobile phones, a laptop and other betting-related material were seized.

All the arrested persons are from Buldhana district and have been identified as Rajendra Savna, Sameer Mahindra Mantri, Praveen Bhutada, Ravindra Dhage and Pankaj Somani. The police had Intelligence reports that bookies in Mumbai and Nashik had held a meeting with a person who had underworld links, in a city hotel last week.
