16 charged over AMRI fire

The city police on Thursday filed a charge sheet against 16 accused in connection with the massive fire at the premises of AMRI Hospitals, Dhakuria, on December 9, which had claimed several lives.

The charge sheet submitted before the Second Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore Court, accuses twelve directors and four employees of the hospital of committing offences under several sections of the IPC and the West Bengal Fire Services Act.

Charges have been brought under include Section 304 of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) in the 126-page document. The police also submitted a voluminous case diary where statements of 400 witnesses have been registered.

The Court confirmed the bail of reputed doctor Mani Chettri, one of the managing directors of the hospital, who was earlier granted conditional bail.

The Court remanded till March 7 six other directors of the hospital who were produced before the court during the day.

Along with Dr Chettri, two more directors, R.S. Agarwal and Pronab Dasgupta, were also granted bail in connection with the case.
