‘Nothing offensive in Ganesha painting’

In August, M.F. Husain’s Ganesha painting occupied a pride of place in the lobby of Hotel Marriot, which is hosting “Manifestations X1,” in collaboration with the Delhi Art Gallery.

The painting was printed on the cover for the catalogue dedicated to the show, Khalid Mohamed, film-maker and critic, said in a blog. He later found that while the exhibition brochure had the painting on its cover, the canvas was nowhere to be seen.

“The nature of the objections to the Lord Ganesha canvas in the Marriott lobby isn’t forthcoming. It would seem that before the objections escalated, the painting was obliterated from the public eye,” he wrote in the blog.

Mr. Mohamed told

The Hindu that the image of Lord Ganesha with a woman in the background was “not offensive at all.”

Without specifying any reasons, a hotel spokesperson said: “The painting was replaced with another Husain painting,” a tribal artwork.

The paiting was removed from its lobby after some guests said they found it “offensive.”

Khalid Mohamed, film-maker and critic, revealed this in a blog on Monday.
