Plane carrying 14 missing in Mexico's Baja

October 15, 2013 10:04 am | Updated 10:04 am IST - LOS CABOS, Mexico

Mexican authorities say a small plane carrying at least 14 people is missing in northern Mexico but they have suspended the search because of bad weather.

Communications and Transportation Department official Enrique Avalos says the pilot of the Cessna 208B lost contact with air traffic controllers shortly after taking off on Monday morning from the airport in the beach town of Loreto, a popular destination for American and Canadian tourists. He says the plane was headed to Ciudad Constitucion, another town in Baja California Sur.

Baja California Sur Gov. Marcos Covarrubias says state rescue crews and soldiers suspended the search because of heavy rains from Tropical Storm Octave, which is in the Pacific moving toward the peninsula.

Covarrubias says a search by ground and air will resume on Tuesday.
