North Korea threatens new nuclear tests

March 30, 2014 05:09 pm | Updated May 19, 2016 12:39 pm IST - Seoul

North Korea threatened on Sunday to carry out new nuclear tests after receiving condemnation this week by the UN Security Council for its recent missile launches.

In a statement published by the state-run media, the North Korean Foreign Ministry in Pyongyang said it could not exclude a “new form of nuclear test” to strengthen its nuclear deterrence.

The United States must accept responsibility in case of a catastrophe on the Korean peninsula, it added.

On Thursday, the members of the U.N. Security Council in an emergency meeting condemned recent missile launches by North Korea as violations of U.N. sanctions.

The meeting came after North Korea conducted successive missile launches last week, including test-firing several missiles into the sea.

A North Korean representative to the United Nations said the tests and continued nuclear programme were in response to U.S. joint military drills with South Korea.
