Court suspends Sarkozy corruption investigation

September 24, 2014 04:08 pm | Updated April 21, 2016 11:17 pm IST - Paris

A French court has suspended a corruption investigation into former President Nicolas Sarkozy, days after he announced his political comeback, local media reported on Wednesday.

The Paris appeals court suspended the probe on Tuesday pending the outcome of Mr. Sarkozy’s challenge to charges of corruption and influence peddling brought against him in July, AFP reported, quoting sources close to the case.

Mr. Sarkozy is accused of promising to secure a plum retirement job for a senior judge in return for information from the bench about the progress of another investigation into his affairs.

Mr. Sarkozy announced last week he would run for the leadership of the centre-right Union for a Popular Movement — a decision seen as setting the stage for a presidential bid in 2017.
