A day after Northern Province (NPC) Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran declined to join President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s delegation to New Delhi, leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) R. Sampanthan wrote to Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi to bring concerns of Tamils to Mr. Rajapaksa’s notice “at the earliest possible opportunity”.
Congratulating him on his “resounding victory” in the Indian elections, Mr. Sampanthan, who also sought an appointment with the BJP leader, said the TNA looked forward to closely working with his new government to strengthen bilateral relations and ensure that violence does not recur in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Sampanthan highlighted post-war challenges faced by the Tamils, pointing to unkept promises of the Sri Lankan government. He pointed out human rights abuses relating to Tamils.
