The Nepali Congress emerged as the single largest party in elections to Nepal’s second Constituent Assembly winning 105 of the 240 seats under the first-past-the-post category results of which were finally declared on Monday.
The Nepali Congress (NC) was followed by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) with 92 seats, the Election Commission said.
Counting for the second category — proportional representation — was underway.
Elections to the Constituent Assembly were held under two categories — first-past-the-post and proportional representation. A total of 240 seats were allocated in the first category and 365 seats in the proportional representation category.
The remaining 26 seats in the 601-member will be nominated by the Cabinet later.
The United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M), the party that had emerged winner with 120 seats in the 2008 elections, got a drubbing this time. It won only 26 seats.
The Maoists were also trailing in the second category.
Madhesi parties, meanwhile, faced a humiliating defeat.
MJF (Loktantrik), a regional party from the southern plains, managed to get just four seats and its splinter party MJF (Nepal) won two.
The Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party won four seats, Rastriya Prajantra Party (RPP) won three, while one independent candidate won. The Sadbhavna Party, Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party and Tarai Madhes Sadbhavna Party also won one seat each.
