More than 115,000 people have been affected by floods and landslides in Sri Lanka after five days of rain, the Disaster Management Centre said on Friday.

At least 23 people have been killed so far, mostly in landslides in Western Province and Southern Province.

Nearly 30,000 of the affected people are being housed in schools, temples and community halls.

The government has deployed the armed forces and relief workers to distribute food parcels and clear the affected areas.

“The flood situation is expected to get worse closer to the southern coastal areas as the rivers, which flow into the sea from these areas are rising,” an official with the Disaster Management Centre said.
