Afghan avalanches bury more homes

An Afghan disaster official said three districts in a remote part of northern Afghanistan have been cut off by avalanches, just a week after nearly 200 people died when snow buried their homes in a valley not far from Kabul.

Daim Kakar, the general director of the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, said that severe weather conditions in Takhar province in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday have cut road access to three districts.

Authorities are attempting to reach villages to deliver emergency supplies, he said.

Across Afghanistan, 320 people have been killed and 187 injured since severe rain and snow swept across 20 provinces, Kakar said.
