China on Sunday said that its focus on developing peaceful lines of communication with other countries was paying dividends as seen in ending border tensions with India.

In an obvious reference to the Doklam crisis, Liu Fang, staff officer in the office for International Military Cooperation (OIMC), pointed to “the Indian military passing the border line into China’s territory”.

Ms. Liu added: “Of course, it is safely solved right now.”

Highlighting the delicate negotiations that were involved, she said that her colleagues in the OIMC and other Ministries, as well as the spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defence, “worked very closely many times” during negotiations with the Indian side. “We reiterated very clearly the Chinese position and all of these actually contributed to the peaceful resolution of the China-Indian cross-border conflict.”

Dialogue mechanisms

Ms. Liu stressed that China was committed to defusing crisis through dialogue.

She said China had been expanding the circle of its friends, not only big powers but also neighbouring countries.

“We have built many dialogues and dialogue mechanisms with many countries at the right levels.”
