Tens of thousands in Germany protest nuclear power

Berlin police spokesman Jens Berger said on Saturday significantly more than 50,000 have turned out in the capital to urge Germany’s leaders to immediately abolish nuclear energy.

Police say tens of thousands are protesting in Germany’s largest cities against the use of nuclear power in the wake of Japan’s Fukushima reactor disaster.

Berlin police spokesman Jens Berger said on Saturday significantly more than 50,000 have turned out in the capital to urge Germany’s leaders to immediately abolish nuclear energy.

Hamburg police spokesman Andreas Schoepflin said on Saturday several tens of thousands turned out in the northern port city centre at a rally dubbed, “Fukushima Warns- Pull the Plug on Nuclear Power.”

Protests are also under way in Munich and Cologne and demonstrators were set to hold a minute of silence later to remember the victims of Japan’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
