Sikh councillor takes over as mayor of U.K. town

An NRI Sikh councillor Jagjit Singh Grewal has become the new mayor of the London borough of Slough.

The 73-year-old Mr. Grewal who was honoured with the Glory of India award last year by the India International Friendship Society, succeeded Joginder Singh Bal.

Mayor Grewal, Virendra Sharma the newly elected Labour MP from Ealing Southall and several newly elected councillors of various boroughs were felicitated here by the Indian Overseas Congress (London) during a gala ceremony at the Indian Gymkhana Club.

Speaking on the occasion, D.L. Kalhan, president of the Indian Overseas Congress (London) said it was a matter of pride that a large number of NRIs including Mr. Sharma were elected in the recent elections.

Mr. Kalhan said the NRI candidates for Councils had done exceedingly well, despite the defeat of the Labour party in the general election.

They included Jagdish Sharma, leader Hounslow Council, Ajmer Dhillon, vice-president of IOC (London), Sunil Chopra, general secretary of IOC (London), Ranjit Dheer, deputy leader, Ealing Council.

Among the councillors present on the occasion were Gopal Dhillon, Poonam Dhillon, Mohinder Gill, Ajmer Grewal, Darshan Grewal, Pratam Grewal and Kamaljit Kaur.
