Russian airliner crashes, 8 crew injured

March 22, 2010 05:53 pm | Updated 05:53 pm IST - MOSCOW

Aviation officials say that a Russian airliner carrying eight crew members and no passengers crashed in a forest while trying to land at a Moscow airport, injuring the crew.

Yelena Galanova, a spokeswoman for the Domodedovo airport, said that the Russian-made Tu-204 of Aviastar-TU went down early Monday in deep fog.

Ms. Galanova said on Rossiya television that the same plane had suffered a technical malfunction over the weekend while on a commercial flight from Moscow to Turkey, and had to turn back.

She said that after the problem was fixed it flew to Khurgada in Turkey, and was returning to Moscow empty when it crashed on final approach.

Authorities are investigating whether the crash has been caused by a pilot error, a technical malfunction or both.
