A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Islas Marias region of Nayarit in Mexico Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake was centred offshore, approximately 755 km west-northwest of Mexico City and 113 km west—northwest of the Pacific resort of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco. It struck at a depth of 36 km at 5:32 p.m. (2332 GMT).

Mexican officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. This was believed to be the strongest trembler in the region in 10 years. As a precautionary measure, tourists were temporarily evacuated from hotels.
