November 05, 2009 09:40 am | Updated 09:40 am IST - JAKARTA

Two of Indonesia’s leading law enforcement officials stepped down to soothe a tide of public rage over an escalating corruption scandal.

Attorney General Hendarman Supandji told reporters the men offered their resignations because they had become a burden to the institution.

Deputy Attorney General Abdul Hakim Ritonga and Gen. Susno Duaji took the unusual move on Thursday. Duaji is the head of national police investigations.

They were named in wiretaps aired on live television this week that exposed a plot to undermine the Corruption Eradication Commission.

The moves are the culmination of a months long battle between the top anti-graft agency and rival police and prosecutors. Indonesia is regularly ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world.
