The five killers of Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, were hanged on Wednesday night, ending the agony that has haunted the nation ever since the gruesome assassination 34 years ago.
The condemned in the historic murder case went to the gallows one by one just after midnight on Wednesday after their mercy and review petitions were rejected by the President and the Supreme Court. The trial lasted over a decade.
Those who were hanged were former military officers Lieutenant-Colonel Syed Faruk Rahman, Lieutenant-Colonel Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Major A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed, Major Bazlul Huda and Lieutenant-Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed. The execution, which had caused widespread tensions, were carried out at the high-security Dhaka Central Jail.

While five have been hanged, six of the 12 condemned are hiding in different countries. One died abroad.
The jail authorities sent the bodies to their respective homes where they were reportedly buried.

It was anticipated that the execution would follow soon after the Supreme Court dismissed their review petitions on Wednesday.
