Death toll at eight following massive German motorway crash

Investigators were still examining the crash site, south of the port city of Rostock. The accident — one of the worst highway pile— ups in Germany since a 1990 crash in fog that killed 11 — was caused by a sandstorm that sunk visibility to less than 100 metres.

Twenty people remained hospitalized on Saturday after a major motorway pile—up the day before that involved 80 cars, leaving eight dead and injuring 131, reported police.

Investigators were still examining the crash site, south of the port city of Rostock. The accident — one of the worst highway pile— ups in Germany since a 1990 crash in fog that killed 11 — was caused by a sandstorm that sunk visibility to less than 100 metres.

Repair work was expected to last days. Some parts of the road melted in the inferno after 30 cars in the pile—up caught fire. The final blazes were only put out Saturday morning.

Authorities were still working to identify some of the dead.
