Hindu Munnani leader murdered in Rameswaram

July 08, 2013 04:58 pm | Updated 05:00 pm IST - Rameswaram

In the second such fatal attack on Hindu Munnani leaders in the past week, a local functionary of the outfit was found murdered in Rameswaram on Monday, sparking tension in the area.

Police said 55-year-old Nambu alias Kuttainambu, secretary of the Hindu Munnani’s Rameswaram unit, was found dead with injuries in the head and chest caused by a boulder.

The murder comes close on the heels of the killing of Hindu Munnani state Secretary Vellaiyan by a gang in Vellore last week, raising suspicion that leaders of the religious and cultural organisation, founded in 1982, were being targeted.

Officials said they were investigating the case in all angles.

Meanwhile, police arrested one Ramachandran who allegedly confessed to murdering Nambu due to previous enmity.

Ramachandran allegedly told the police that his family and Nambu were at loggerheads for a long time and that he, along with some others, murdered him.

Police personnel have been posted in the sensitive areas of the holy island which has a sizeable population of Muslims, police said.

Meanwhile, BJP local leader Muralidharan appealed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to provide assistance to the family of Nambu, who leaves behind six daughters and a son.
