Activists of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), street vendors and small traders on Tuesday took out a rally towards the Legislative Assembly here, urging the Union Territory government to implement provisions of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014 that guarantees livelihood to them.
CITU State Treasurer R. Malathi Chittibabu, CPI (M) State Committee member V. Perumal, Puducherry unit CPI (M) secretary R.Rajangam and Honorary president T. Murugan participated in the rally which commenced on the Kamarajar Road. Street vendors, workers and owners of night eateries and push cart vendors also participated.
Towards the end of the event they submitted a memorandum urging the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and Chief Secretary Chetan B. Sanghi to implement the provisions of the Act.

They said the new law was enacted to protect the rights of urban street vendors and to regulate street vending activities. Demanding the municipal authorities to issue identity cards to the vendors, they said the municipality should stop harassing them.
