Vasan sees Congress resurgence in TN

Says wherever he goes, crowds cheer him as if it was a victory celebration

Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan has said he can see the resurgence of the Congress all over Tamil Nadu as it has chosen to go it alone in the Lok Sabha elections.

Wherever he goes, a large number of the cadre and people are lustily cheering him, making him feel that he has not come for electioneering but for victory celebrations, Mr. Vasan said on Monday, canvassing support for R. Devadas, the party candidate for the Kallakurichi Lok Sabha seat, at Kallakurichi and Rishivandhiyam.

Terming the Congress-led UPA government the “people’s government,” Mr. Vasan said it had launched many welfare schemes, but the regional parties were hampering their implementation.

Mr. Vasan blamed the Dravidian parties for the power crisis in the State. Six decades ago, the Neyveli Lignite Corporation was established when K. Kamaraj was Chief Minister. With foresight, many dams were built across rivers to augment hydel power generation. While Kamaraj opened schools in every village, the Dravidian parties were opening TASMAC outlets there, making the life of children miserable, as addiction caused marital disputes and ruined families.

Mr. Vasan said that at a recent campaign meeting in Chennai, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, had said the DMK and the AIADMK were hampering the growth Tamil Nadu. “If such is the case, can Mr. Modi give an assurance that after the elections, he will not seek the support of either of the parties?”
