MDMK general secretary and convenor of the People’s Welfare Front (PWF) Vaiko on Friday assured that prohibition will be implemented in the Union Territory in a phased manner if the alliance was voted to power in the May 16 Assembly elections.

Talking to reporters here, Mr. Vaiko said that new bar licenses would not be permitted and the working hours of liquor outlets would be reduced. He also assured his commitment to procure Statehood for Puducherry and waiver of outstanding loans to the tune of Rs. 6,500 crore.

Accusing the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of trying to crush the AAP Government in Delhi, he said that full statehood was essential for both Delhi and Puducherry for their development.

Mr. Vaiko alleged that both the ruling AIADMK and DMK in Tamil Nadu were distributing cash to voters with the help of police and government officials.

Cash is being distributed in vehicles including 108 Ambulances with fake registration numbers.

He said that the Election commission was not taking action against cash distribution despite his complaints on cash being stashed in the bungalow of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at Siruthavur.
