Students resort to road blockade

Students of the Indira Nagar Government High School resorted to a road blockade in front of the premises on Wednesday protesting against shortage of teachers.

The students along with activists of Students Federation of India (SFI) raised slogans against the officials of the Education department for not posting teachers on a permanent basis at the school.

They later took out a procession and demanded a written assurance from officials that the vacant posts of teachers would be filled within a week. Though officials pacified them the students refused to relent.

Though schools had reopened after a month classes are not being held properly due to shortage of teachers. Nearly 200 students studying plus two in the school are affected due to lack of teachers for Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Mathematics and Commerce, SFI Puducherry unit secretary A. Anand said.

The department had been apprised of the situation many times. But they had failed to take any action. He said the Education department acted tough and threatened students when they complained against shortage of teachers.

The SFI would mobilise students from all schools and intensify its protest if the government failed to appoint teachers within a week’s time, Mr. Anand added.
