The Communist Party of India- Marxist CPI(M), Puducherry unit on Friday staged a demonstration urging the Union government to roll back prices of petroleum products in sync with the global price of crude oil. In Lawspet, CPI(M) unit cadre under its secretary R.Rajangam staged the protest against the Union government for failing to bring prices of petroleum products down even after the global price crude oil decreased several times.

Mr.Rajangam said, “Instead of the people benefitting from the decrease in the global price of crude oil since June 2014, the Union government has been exploiting the situation to fill its own coffers by hiking excise duties. We demand that the full benefit of the fall in global crude price be passed on to the people and that the retail prices of petrol and diesel be commensurately cut further.”

They also demanded that petrol and diesel per litre should be sold between Rs.30 and Rs.45. Charging that the oil companies would gain more benefits, the CPI(M) cadre said if the prices of petrol and diesel were commensurately cut, prices of essential commodities could have come down.
