The Puducherry government is set to file an appeal in the Madras High Court against the acquittal of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, and the junior Acharya, Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, in the Sankararaman murder case.
The Department of Prosecution had been preparing the appeal since the acquittal.
The papers went to Lt. Governor Virendra Kataria for approval. According to sources, the Lt. Governor directed the authorities to file an appeal.

The court had also acquitted 22 others, including one who had died during the trial. Sankararaman had been manager of the Sri Varadarajaswami Perumal Temple at Kancheepuram when he was killed by a gang in 2004.
The then Principal District Sessions Judge, C.S. Murugan, had said the charge was not proved because more than 20 prosecution witnesses turned hostile.
