The Puducherry Government is close to clinching a deal with private medical colleges on allocation of seats under the Government quota for the current academic year, it is understood.

A top official said the Government had arrived at the number of seats at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy with the management representatives of private medical colleges here on Tuesday.

List of break-up

The list of break up of seats in all the private medical colleges would be made official in a few days.

A private medical college in Puducherry has approached the Medical Council of India (MCI) seeking permission to increase the number of MBBS seats from 100 to 150.

The college is yet to get the approval of the MCI. The government would hold talks with the college management and try to secure more under the Government quota to benefit more students, he said. V. Balasubramanian, president, Puducherry State Students and Parents Welfare Association said that private colleges had not earmarked 50 per cent of seats under the Government quota in any academic year.

“The colleges had been allocating seats to the Government quota as per their whims and fancies and students of Puducherry are let down.

The Government had also failed to get 50 per cent of PG seats in private medical colleges in the Union territory”, he said.
