Promoting antenatal care for safe delivery of newborns

Jipmer on Tuesday organised an awareness session on the role of antenatal care in ensuring safe delivery and the health of the newborn.

Organised by the Jipmer Health Education for All Forum, the programme was part of an ongoing series of community awareness initiatives on health promotion and disease prevention and management.

The 24th interactive session focused on building knowledge, educating, clarifying and clearing the myths among the general public about antenatal care.

The prime focus of the session was on promoting understanding about the comprehensive health care of pregnant mothers for ensuring safe delivery and a healthy child.

Special emphasis was laid on the significance of routine medical checkup, proper balanced diet and mental health care of pregnant mothers. A panel of experts outlined the risk factors to be avoided to prevent any complication for the mother and foetus health.

The session also enlightened the role of family and society in providing safe and sound environment for the pregnant mothers and foetus specifically focusing on gender discrimination in childbirth, avoiding illegal measures of gender identity test, providing good emotional and social support.

The experts also addressed several doubts raised by the public. About 250 attendees participated.

The panel of experts featured Dr. Gowri Durairajan, Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. T. Chithra, Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Revathi Srinivasan, senior dietician, Department of Dietetics and Gnanaselane, Medical Social Worker, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Hena Melya, Medical Social Worker, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, moderated the session.

The proceedings were telecast live to all Medical Colleges of South India under National Medical College Network (NMCN) Project through Jipmer Regional Resource Centre.
