PPA notifies draft land use map

Suggestions for improvements, objections invited till December end

The Puducherry Planning Authority (PPA) has notified the Draft Existing Land Use Map and Register for public perusal ahead of the finalisation of the Comprehensive Development Plan.

The draft Land Use Map and Register with data, maps and details of land use for the entire Puducherry region (covering a total area of 293.77 sq.km.) has been uploaded on the website of the Department of Town and Country Planning for inviting suggestions for improvement and registering objections. The draft copy has also been kept for inspection at the office of the PPA.

The land use map and register has been prepared by PPA in the prescribed format indicating the present use of every piece of land in the planning areas.

The major land use classifications are: Residential, Commercial, Industrial, Public and Semi Public, Agriculture, Mixed use, Water body, Mangroves/Eco zone, No Development Zone, Recreational, Traffic and Transportation etc. “The public can respond with their suggestions and objections till December end. The Government would look into the suggestions and objections and it would be approved with required modifications wherever necessary to finalise the Comprehensive Development Plan for the Puducherry Planning Area,” PPA sources told

The Comprehensive Development Plan is being prepared by Ahmedabad-based SAI Consulting Engineers Private Limited at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.17 crore. The CDP covering social and physical infrastructure will encompass a planning strategy of up to 2036.

The CDP includes two municipalities — Puducherry and Oulgaret and five commune panchayats — Ariyankuppam, Villianur, Mannadipet, Bahour and Nettapakkam, the official said.

The PPA caters to a population of 9,50,289 (Census 2011). Puducherry Municipality spread over 19.54 sq km has a population of 2,44,377 while Oulgaret Municipality falls in an area of 34.40 sq km with a population of 3,00,104. The rest are in the commune panchayats. The plan would focus on social and physical infrastructure like education, health, transport, water supply and sewerage including inputs from the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) which is being prepared by the Transport Department.

The plan is expected to be finalised by the Puducherry Government by February.
