Pondicherry University to start centre for geomatics

It would act as a hub for all activities related to the subject, including research and capacity building

A new milestone: The proposed Centre for Geomatics Teaching and Research in Puducherry University will cater to the needs of government departments.

The Pondicherry University aims at establishing a Centre for Geomatics Teaching and Research, said Vice-Chancellor in-charge Anisa Basheer on Monday.

Speaking at the inaugural of Puducherry chapter of Indian Society of Geomatics (ISG), she said the centre would be the hub of all activities related to geomatics, including teaching, research and capacity building.

The centre would be developed in such a way that it would cater to the needs of government departments, she said.

Inaugurating the ISG chapter, Director, Space Application Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation, Tapan Misra, highlighted the importance of geomatics in various fields. He wanted the students and faculty to make use of the facility available at the Space Application Centre for research.

A. Senthil Kumar, Director, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), highlighted the potential use of geomatics in health care sector.

The IIRS, he said, had played an important role in capacity building in the field of geomatics, a press release from the university said.

Portal launched

The university launched its alumni portal. The portal would pave the way for active participation of alumni in various events organised by the university. It would also help the preseny students get connected with old students for career guidance, the release added.

Representatives from Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, Vector Control Research Centre, Groundwater Board, French Institute of Pondicherry, Department of Science, Technology and Environment attended the function, the release said.
