Pondicherry University faculty gets Renato Dulbecco Memorial Award

R. Rukkumani, a faculty member of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology of Pondicherry University has received the Renato Dulbecco Memorial Award for her research in the area of targeted anti-cancer therapy.

Dr. Rukkumani’s award-winning work advoates a novel therapeutic strategy by targeting ROR1 receptor, which expresses only in cancer patients, for treating colon cancer.

The discovery is expected to improve the efficacy of the treatment in cancer; more specifically, it will eliminate the toxicity associated with existing anti-cancer therapy.

Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gurmeet Singh offered his felicitations.

The award was presented to Dr. Rukkumani at the recently-concluded second World Cancer Congress in Bengaluru.

Another faculty member in the news is P.P. Mathur, professor and head of the department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology of Pondicherry University.

He has been elected as a Fellow of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI).

According to a university press note, Prof. Mathur has done significant research work in Molecular Endocrinology and Toxicology.

His studies have provided new insights into the mechanism of action of some of the environmental contaminants.

Dr. Mathur has also significantly contributed to the development of Bioinformatics teaching and research in India.

Apart from being the founder-head of the Bioinformatics Centre in Pondicherry University, he sits on the editorial board of six reputed journals.

He is also a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) and has been elected as seneral secretary (scientific activities), Indian Science Congress Association (2016-19) and vice-president, Asian Association of Andrology, Shanghai (2016-19).

He has also served as Vice-Chancellor of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar (2012-17).
