Police will no longer walk along the 2-km-long beach promenade in Puducherry. Whether in the morning or evening, they will be on wheels while patrolling.

Puducherry Director General of Police Sunil Kumar Gautam on Sunday launched the self-balancing electric scooter for patrolling along the beach promenade. He had said: “It is the first time in India that self-balancing electric scooter is being used for patrolling.”

Four scooters were given to the police who will patrol the beach promenade in the morning between 6 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. and after 5.30 p.m. everyday.

A senior police official said that it make patrolling easier for the police here. While two scooters were purchased by the government, two were donated by individuals. “The police is trying to get increase the number of such scooters if any private players are willing to donate through their CSR activities,” noted the police official.

He added that since the self-balancing electric scooter will run only on smooth asphalted roads, it would be only on the beach road. “It is most suitable for patrolling on the beach,” the official claimed.
