Officials are hopeful of a positive outcome from the annual general body meeting of the Medical Council of India (MCI) which on Monday will discuss the grant of approval to admissions in the Indira Gandhi Government Medical and Research Institute (IGGMCRI).
Last April, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had recommended to the Union government against granting approval to the State-owned IGGMCRI for student admissions. The MCI also cited the inadequate faculty as the main reason.
Subsequently the IGGMCRI filled 60 posts of Associate Professor and Assistant Professor and sent a compliance report to the Union of Health Ministry.

As per the Supreme Court direction, all States had to complete the first phase of medical counselling by June 25, the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) conducted the counselling for MBBS and BDS courses on June 24 and 25.
At the time of counselling, then the students were asked to furnish choice of the course and college only in view of the approval being pending from the MCI in respect of the Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute and also the pendency of a case in the Madras High Court relating to the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences.

The CENTAC on Sunday announced that the counselling for remaining unfilled seats of MBBS and BDS along with other biology-based courses would be conducted from July 7, Monday.
“The existing vacancies are displayed on the CENTAC website,” said the Convener of CENTAC.
