A newly married couple residing at the Keezhputhupattu refugee camp near here approached the office of the Superintendent of Police (North) on Friday evening seeking police protection after the bride’s family threatened them with dire consequences.
However, the police refused to accept their complaint citing jurisdictional issues and directed them to the Kottakuppam police station or the Villupuram Superintendent of Police office.
R. Punithakumar (24) is a fish vendor while R. Nageshwari (19) studying BCA first year in a college in Puducherry. The duo residing at the Keezhputhupattu camp fell in love and decided to get married despite strong opposition from their families. They moved out of their respective homes in the camp and got married at a temple in Puducherry on Friday.

“We do not want to return to the camp as we fear anything could happen to us. The bride’s family already assaulted me,” said Punithakumar.
However, police officials refused to accept their complaint since the refugee camp was in Villupuram district and directed them to the Kottakuppam police station.
