Byelection to the Kamaraj Nagar Assembly constituency will be held on October 21.

The seat fell vacant after the incumbent, V. Vaithilingam, resigned from the post after his election to the Lok Sabha.

Announcing the bypoll schedule, Additional Chief Electoral Officer L. Kumar told reporters on Saturday that with the Election Commission announcing the date, the model code of conduct had come into force in Puducherry region from Saturday.

The code will be in force till the election process gets over on October 27.

September 30 is the last date for filing nominations. The papers will be scrutinised on October 1.

October 3 will be the last date for withdrawal of nominations.

The counting of votes will be taken up on October 24, said Mr. Kumar.

As per the electoral roll published on March 26, the constituency has 35,325 voters.

Mr. Kumar said of the total voters, 18,099 were women, 17,225 men and one third gender.

The Election Commission has decided to use EVMs and VVPATs in the byelection. Adequate number of machines have been made available and all steps taken to ensure the polls are conducted with the EVMs, he said.

Stern action would be taken against persons found writing or marking with ink, chalk, paint or any other material in open places.

The person would be prosecuted under relevant provisions of Section 4 of The Pondicherry Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act 2000.
