May 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The nationwide transport strike called by various trade unions protesting against the Road Transport and Safety Bill evoked a mixed response in the city on Thursday.

Private buses, auto rickshaws and tempos stayed off the roads while government buses plied as usual. People travelling to neighbouring districts of Cuddalore and Villupuram were stranded at the new bus stand as most of the private buses participated in the strike.

Windscreens of three buses and a mini lorry were stoned by miscreants. No other major incident of violence was reported from any other part of the city.

As many as 47 persons belonging to various trade unions were arrested for staging road blockades in various parts of the city. Shops, banks and business establishments functioned as usual on Thursday.

Trade unions have protested against the Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014 introduced by the BJP government claiming that it would only help the private sector and affect the Sate Road Transport Corporations.
