‘Everything done in accordance with legal provisions’

Minister for Transport M.O.H.F. Shahjahan has denied charges of irregularities in the registration of luxury cars owned by actors Amala Paul and Fahad Fazil at Puducherry.

After the issue was flagged by Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, the Transport Department, along with the police, conducted a detailed probe. The probe found that the registration was done as per provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, he said.

“Everything has been done in accordance with provisions of the Act. The government was well within its rights to fix the registration fee. It is a major source of revenue for the Union Territory,” he told reporters. The department goes by the documents provided by the owner of the vehicle and affidavit given by a notary, he said.

The Lieutenant Governor should clarify on the irregularity committed by the Transport Department in the registration process. Several people from other States have registered their vehicles, including luxury cars, due to low tax structure, Mr. Shahjahan said.

The territorial administration has financially benefited because of the low tax structure, he added.
