Man held in hit-and-run case

Police have arrested a man in the hit-and-run case which resulted in the death of a French national on early Sunday morning near the Indira Gandhi statue.

Claire Sarrouy (23) succumbed to head injuries, after the scooter she was travelling on was hit by a truck in the wee hours of Sunday.

Her companion, Pierre Nouet, was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment at the neurotrauma intensive care unit in Jipmer.

Ms. Claire and Mr. Pierre were pursuing their postgraduate studies in Transcultural Design from the L’École de design Nantes Atlantique in France.

They were in Bangalore for the last one year as part of an exchange programme, said Kshitiz Anand, Program Director and Head- India operations, at the India Studio of the L’École de design Nantes Atlantique in Bangalore, which is based out of the Srishti School of Art, Design, and Technology.

Ms. Claire and Mr. Pierre were visiting Puducherry for the weekend.

The man, Iyanraj, 31, was arrested and the truck seized at Anumanthai near the Kalapet toll gate, said Senthil Kumar, Inspector, Traffic Police.

A case has been filed with the Traffic Police (North), Jawaharlal Nehru Street and the accused remanded to judicial custody. The truck belonged to seafood export company, Diamond Seafood Exports, Thoothukudi.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pierre is on ventilator support and is semi-conscious, said staff at Jipmer.

Ms. Claire and Mr. Pierre’s family are making travel arrangements to reach Puducherry.
