On a holiday, the best thing to do would be to follow your instincts and make your own plans, says travelogue writer, blogger and poet Uma Mohan.

For this travel writer, it was a 10-day trip to north India that proved to be a trigger for a series of articles on travel on her blog. She has summed up her experience in a book titled ‘Veyyil Puranam’.

“We had asked the advice of a friend who put us on to someone else. With good intention he took us a government-run guest house. It was a tacky place and near nowhere. Perhaps if we had made our own reservations we would have booked a better place. So I believe it’s always better to make your own decisions when it comes to travel. I hope other people will learn from my experiences,” explained Uma, a senior announcer with the All India Radio in Puducherry.

Her articles are candid accounts of all that happened during the trip.

“You do find a lot of content in English online. So I wanted to write a fun-filled vacation guide in Tamil for people wishing to go to places in the north including Haridwar, Pune, Agra, Delhi,” says the author, whose voice on the radio is quite familiar across Puducherry.

As part of her job in AIR, she anchors programmes including Poovaiyar Poonga. “For me personally it is also a record of the time I explored unknown places and enjoyed with my family. By documenting my experience I hope to inspire others,” she said.
