Say ‘the one-sided anti-workforce’ law will reduce their wages to meagre amount

Burden of despair: Loaders staging a protest against the implementation of the Puducherry Loading and Unloading Act on Monday.

A large number of workers from the loading and unloading sector on Monday took out a march to protest against implementation of the Puducherry Loading and Unloading (Regulation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 2017.

The workers attached to the Centre of India Trade Union, the Indian National Trade Union Congress, the All India Trade Union Congress and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh participated in the protest march.

Veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) T. Murugan said the act was one-sided and anti-workforce. If implemented, the wage for the workers would be limited to a meagre amount, he added.

Later, they staged a demonstration near the Head Post Office. Workers from all the regions of the union territory attended the march and demonstration. The Act, which was notified in December last year, was intended to prevent extortion, intimidatory or other unlawful practices connected with loading and unloading and transportation of goods.
