Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has asked the Tourism Department to explore the feasibility of promoting the Velrampet Lake as a tourist destination by introducing tourism promotion activities. On Sunday, she cycled to Velrampet Lake along with Raj Nivas staff to get a first-hand account of the condition of the lake.
A release from Raj Nivas said that the lake had been filled to the brim. The lake, which for long remained a ground of litter, open defecation and den for pigs, had been transformed into a beautiful lake with lotus flowers thanks to the collective efforts of the line departments of PWD, Municipality, Forest Department and the local community.
Ms. Bedi said that the transformation of the lake will benefit the local community by making it a better place to live and also open avenues for livelihood when promoted as a tourist destination.

The Lt. Governor asked the Tourism Department to explore the possibility of promoting the lake as a tourist destination. She also suggested constituting a committee comprising of the local MLA, residents and officers from all line departments for maintenance of the lake.
The committee would take up immediate maintenance works, including removing the water hyacinths, repairing the damaged fence, plant creepers erecting sign boards and promoting a cycle track around the lake.
She also directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the community toilet at the lake be made functional and handed over to the local self-help groups for maintenance. The Lt. Governor also interacted with the local residents and asked them to take ownership of the lake.
