Kalpana Sampath was given National Florence Nightingale Award

Kalpana Sampath, Assistant Nursing Superintendent, JIPMER Hospital, Puducherry, has been honoured with National Florence Nightingale Award on the occasion of International Nurses Day organised recently at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

Ms. Sampath was among the 35 nursing professionals in India who were presented awards by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The award carries Rs. 50, 000 cash, a certificate, a citation certificate and a medal.

The National Florence Nightingale Awards were constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in 1973 as a mark of recognition for the meritorious services of nurses. International Nurses Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary (May 12, 1820) of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing.

In her over three decades of service in the nursing profession, she spent 11 years in the Indian Army working in insurgency-hit J & K. At the time of Operation Blue Star and later, during the 1984 riots, she worked for mass emergencies.

Served during natural calamities

She has also served people affected by tsunami in 2004 and Cyclone Thane in 2012. She is a member of the Patient Safety Committee, the Quality Council, Fire Safety and the Transplant Unit at JIPMER Hospital.

Among her notable contributions has been the authoring of a Tamil-to-English educational module for learning Tamil language which is used by patients and professionals. Subash Chandra Parija, JIPMER Director and Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI) were among those who felicitated Ms. Sampath on her achievement.
