Chief Minister N. Rangasamy had announced an outlay of Rs 15.31 crore for activities of the Labour Department in the 2015- 2016 Budget speech in April this year. At present there are 14 Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) where 23 regular skill development short term courses are being offered. Apart from this, there are 6 Vocational Training Providers (VTPs) who offer courses of 120 hours to 600 hours duration, said R. Sarangaraju, Director, Puducherry Skill Development Society.
The Puducherry government aims to provide skill training to 10,000 people a year. Four courses, which include those for electrician, fitter, wireman and draughtsman civil are already NSQF-compliant, he said.
The remaining courses have to be upgraded.

Work is also under way to begin courses under the Rural Skill Development Scheme in Karayamputhur, a village under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.
